Fall Fact Sheet No. 18 & Compact Action
October 24th, 2011
The Columbia River compact convened by teleconference at noon on Monday, October 24, 2011. Late returning coho stocks have been under-performing with respect to preseason expectations so far, leading staff to conclude that the inseason run-size is below the preseason forecast. That leads correspondingly to lower allowable harvest impacts overall. With a maximum of 400 coho left available for non-Indian harvest, staff recommended scheduling no more non-Indian commercial openers for the remainder of the season.
With respect to the treaty setline sturgeon fishery, tribal biologists expect the harvest quota for sturegon in the Bonneville Pool to be reached this week. They recommended closing the Bonneville Pool setline fishery as of 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. The setline sturgeon fisheries in The Dalles and John Day Pools will continue as previously scheduled until Monday, October 31, 2011.
