Fall FactSheet No. 17 & Compact Action

October 19th, 2009

The Columbia River Compact convened by teleconference at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009 to consider ongoing non-Indian commercial fisheries in the late fall time period. Fall Fact Sheet No. 17 is appended as a PDF file. The Compact Action Notice is posted in both the ODFW and the WDFW versions, because they are expressed differently. But, further clarification is in order.

The Compact on Monday, October 19 came to a decision that might cause confusion for some. The weekly sturgeon limit for Sunday night’s opener in Zones 4-5 was 7 sturgeon per boat per calendar week. Monday’s Compact lowered that to 6 sturgeon per boat per week. If you already caught 7 sturgeon in Zones 4-5 on Sunday night, October 18-19, it’s still perfectly legitimate. It just means you’re done retaining sturgeon for the week. For the guys down on the lower river, you now have an opportunity to go after your sturgeon in the 9-inch daylight opener on Thursday, but the limit is 6 per boat per week. Presumably, if you’re fishing Zones 4-5, and you didn’t catch all 7 sturgeon, the limit is now 6, just like it is in Zones 1-3.
