Corinthian Yacht Club Races in August

August 5th, 2009

The Corinthian Yacht Club of Portland sponsors evening sail races on Tuesdays and Thusdays between July 21 and August 27. Several of these dates overlap with early fall fishing openers set recently by the Columbia River Compact:

  • Tuesday, August 4
  • Thursday, August 6
  • Tuesday, August 18
  • Thursday, August 20
  • Tuesday, August 25
  • Thursday, August 27

The warning signal for the start of the races sounds at 1830 (6:30 p.m.). All sail racers try to be off the water by nightfall. The races take place in courses laid out between the I-5 and I-205 bridges in the Portland-Vancouver metro area.

Since the gillnet fleet will be moving along with the movement of fish during the month, the two likeliest evenings for potential interactions between gillnet fishermen and sailing enthusiasts are Tuesday, August 25 and Thursday, August 27.  All fishing periods after mid August begin at 8:00 p.m. As a result, the overlap between gillnet fishing and sail racing is minimal, but the potential for interactions does exist.

The 2009 Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association Chart of 2009 Numeric Sailing Courses and Windward Leeward Alphabetic Courses are posted below as PDF files. (For those on dial-up, they are quite large files.) Note that there are numerous alternative course, depending on which way the wind is blowing.
