Summer FactSheet 5 & Tribal Action

July 19th, 2010

The Columbia River Compact convened by teleconference on Monday, July 19 to consider additional Treaty Tribal commercial fishing time in Zone 6, between Bonneville and McNary dams. As is normal, Summer Fact Sheet No. 5 was prepared by fishery biologists on staff at the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission to share with their co-managers on the Joint Management Staff of the Washington and Oregon Departments of Fish & Wildlife.

The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for US v. Oregon management process met July 7 and downgraded the upriver summer Chinook run size to 75,000 fish at the mouth of the Columbia River. On the other hand, the sockeye run size has been upgraded yet again to  398,000 fish at the mouth of the river. This is by far the largest sockeye run on record since fish counts began at Bonneville dam in 1938.

Since Treaty Indian fishermen still have fish to catch under the 2008-2017 US v. Oregon Management Agreement guidelines, the staff recommendation proposed additional commercial fishing time in Zone 6. Summer Fact Sheet No. 5 and the subsequent Columbia River Compact Action Notice are appended below as PDF files.
