March 28th, 2017
The Columbia River Compact convened by teleconference at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 to consider ongoing Select Area fishing seasons in the winter/spring management period. Up to this date in the year, Select Area catches have been much lower than anticipated. Select Area landings through March 24 total only 169 spring Chinook, or 41% of the 5-year average. Catches should improve as the season progresses.
The Joint Management Staff recommended modifying the season to include additional openers in the Select Area Fishery Enhancement program terminal fisheries in hopes of landing high value fish as the fishery picks up.
Winter Fact Sheet No. 9 is appended in the form of a PDF file. The subsequent Compact Action Notice is posted as well.
