On Saturday, February 16, 2012, Terry Richard of The Oregonian posted several videos of fisher poets reciting short poems at the 15th annual Fisher Poets Gathering in Astoria, Oregon on the Oregon Live website. John Palmes, Dave Densmore, Moe Bowstern, Erin Fristad, and Jon Broderick each perform a short piece, all of them recorded by Motoya Nakamura at 2012 Fisher Poets Gathering. Viewing them is a good way to get in the spirit of the Fisher Poets Gathering, which is coming up February 22-24 in Astoria. This year’s event is the 16th annual Fisher Poets Gathering.
For those who haven’t attended the Fisher Poets Gathering before, it is a celebration of commercial fishing by and for commercial fishermen. Each year, the brave men and women of the commercial fishing industry gather in the historic fishing port of Astoria, Oregon, to share their poetry of work with their fellow commercial fishermen. Many of them happen to be very powerful writers, as journalists from major newspapers and magazine have discovered over the past 15 years.
