January 31st, 2013
The Columbia River Compact convened for a face-to-face meeting to set opening seasons for the 2013 spring fishery at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. Non-Indian commercial and recreational fisheries during winter and spring were outlined. Seasons set included winter commercial sturgeon fisheries, recreational sturgeon fisheries, and the tribal commercial setline sturgeon fishery in Zone 6. Also set were winter and spring fisheries in the Select Areas. Specific guidance for mainstem commercial fishing periods will be decided at individual Compact teleconferences later in the season.
The first Joint Management Staff Fact Sheet and Compact Action Notice for winter and spring fisheries also contains to requirements and gear restrictions for the mark-selective commercial tangle net fishery for spring Chinook. Because the pre-season forecast for spring Chinook in 2013 is greatly reduced from those of the past few years, prospects for the mainstem commercial fishery for spring Chinook look very limited for this year.
