Cowlitz River Smelt Seasons Set

The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife has set recreational and commercial seasons for eulachon smelt for the Cowlitz River in southwest Washington. The seasons are consistent witha Level 1 fishery, in accordance with the Washington and Oregon Eulachon Management Plan.

Abundance of eulachon smelt has been depressed along much of the Pacific Coast since 2005. The National Marine Fisheries Service is currently considering listing smelt as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
